EXIF Metadata Remover

Photos quietly record where they were taken, the camera or phone, the date and sometimes your name. This tool shows what each photo contains, then saves a copy with those blocks cut out of the file. The picture data is copied byte for byte, so quality is untouched, and nothing leaves your browser.

How to use

  1. Drop one or more JPEG, PNG or WebP photos onto the box, or click it to choose files.
  2. Read the summary for each photo: camera, dates, software, author and, if present, the GPS position with a location warning.
  3. Check the list of blocks that will be removed and their sizes. Leave “Keep colour profile” on so colours stay accurate.
  4. Leave “Keep orientation” on for phone photos, so portrait shots stay upright after the rest of the EXIF is gone.
  5. Click Download clean copy for each photo (saved as name-clean.jpg), or Download all clean copies.

Examples

Found in a phone photo
Camera: Pixelbrand Phone 7 · Taken: 2026:05:04 09:08:07 · GPS position: 51.507350, -0.127758 · Embedded thumbnail: 4321 bytes
Removed from the clean copy
EXIF (12.4 KB) · XMP (3.1 KB) · Photoshop / IPTC (1.0 KB) · Comment (40 B) — kept: JFIF header, ICC colour profile, orientation tag

Supported formats

  • JPEG: removes EXIF (including GPS and the embedded thumbnail), XMP, extended XMP, Photoshop/IPTC, comments, MPF and other APP segments, plus any data appended after the end of the image. Keeps the JFIF header, the Adobe colour-transform segment and, optionally, the ICC profile.
  • PNG: removes tEXt, zTXt, iTXt (including XMP), eXIf, tIME and unknown private chunks. Kept chunks are copied verbatim, so their checksums stay valid.
  • WebP: removes the EXIF and XMP chunks, clears the matching VP8X flags and rewrites the RIFF size.
  • HEIC, AVIF, TIFF/RAW and GIF are not edited — the tool says so instead of silently converting them.

Privacy

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or open is sent anywhere. Privacy policy.

Limitations

  • Only JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported. HEIC photos from iPhones need converting to JPEG first.
  • Without “Keep orientation”, phone photos that rely on the EXIF rotation tag will show sideways or upside down.
  • Anything after the end of a JPEG is removed too — that includes the short video of a Motion Photo / Live Photo stored in the same file.
  • Metadata is not the only thing that can identify a photo: faces, street signs, screens and reflections in the picture itself are untouched.
  • Segments placed between the scans of a progressive JPEG are copied as they are (cameras do not put metadata there).

FAQ

Does removing EXIF reduce quality?

No. The tool never decodes or re-compresses the picture. It copies the file and leaves out the metadata blocks, so the compressed image data in the clean copy is byte-for-byte identical to the original. The file only gets smaller by the size of the metadata removed.

How do I know if my photo shows where it was taken?

Drop it in. If the EXIF GPS block or XMP contains coordinates, a red warning shows the latitude and longitude (converted to decimal degrees) before you download anything. The clean copy has the GPS block removed.

Why might my photo appear rotated after removing metadata?

Phones often save the pixels sideways and add an EXIF Orientation tag telling viewers to rotate them. Removing all EXIF removes that tag. With “Keep orientation” ticked the tool writes back a tiny EXIF block (under 40 bytes) containing only the rotation, so the photo displays correctly and nothing else is kept.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Files are read with your browser's FileReader and edited in memory on your device. The tool makes no network requests, so it also works offline once the page has loaded.
