File Hash & Checksum Checker
Drop in a file — or paste text — to compute its MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests, then paste an expected checksum to verify a download. The file is read locally and never uploaded.

How to use
- Drag a file onto the drop zone (or click to browse), or type text in the text field.
- Wait for the four digests to compute — large files show progress.
- Paste the checksum published by the download site into the verify field; a match or mismatch banner appears instantly.
Supported formats
- Any file type; hashing reads the raw bytes.
- Algorithms: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 (SHA family via the Web Crypto API).
Privacy
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or open is sent anywhere. Privacy policy.
Limitations
- Very large files are limited by browser memory, since the file is read client-side.
- MD5 and SHA-1 are provided for compatibility checks only — they are broken for security purposes; prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512.
FAQ
Is my file uploaded to compute the hash?
No. The file is read with the browser's FileReader API and hashed locally. It never leaves your device.
Which hash should I use to verify a download?
Use the algorithm the publisher provides — SHA-256 is the most common today. Avoid relying on MD5 or SHA-1 for security decisions.
