Extract Text from PDF

Load a PDF and get its text content extracted page by page, ready to copy or download as a .txt file. Extraction runs locally with Mozilla's pdf.js — the document is never uploaded.

On-device — downloads its library once PDF Free · no signup
Network notice: Your PDF never leaves your device. The open-source extraction library (pdf.js, Apache-2.0 license) is fetched from the cdnjs CDN the first time you use the tool.

How to use

  1. Drop a PDF onto the drop zone or click to browse — extraction starts automatically.
  2. Review the extracted text, organized with per-page separators.
  3. Copy it, or download the whole thing as a .txt file.

Supported formats

  • Input: standard (unencrypted) PDF files with a text layer, up to 200 MB.
  • Output: plain text with “--- Page N ---” separators, downloadable as UTF-8 .txt.

Privacy

Your input is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads its open-source processing library from cdnjs.cloudflare.com — the library is downloaded, your data is not sent. Privacy policy.

Limitations

  • Scanned PDFs (images of text) contain no selectable text — OCR is not supported, and the tool will tell you when a file has no text layer.
  • Complex multi-column layouts and tables come out as reading-order text, not preserved formatting.

FAQ

Why does my PDF produce no text?

It is almost certainly a scan — the pages are images, not text. Extracting from scans requires OCR, which this tool does not perform (yet).

Is the document uploaded for extraction?

No. Text is read by pdf.js running in your browser; the PDF never leaves your device, so it is safe for confidential material.

Does it keep the formatting?

Line breaks are reconstructed from the text positions, but fonts, columns and tables are flattened to plain text — that is inherent to .txt output.
