PDF Metadata Editor
See what a PDF says about itself — title, author, the app that made it, when it was created — then correct those properties or wipe them before you share the file. The PDF is read and rewritten on your device.
or click to browse — nothing is uploaded
How to use
- Drop a PDF onto the drop zone or click to browse.
- Check the summary: page count, PDF version, whether an XMP metadata stream exists and any extra Info entries.
- Edit Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer or the two dates. Leave a field empty to remove that entry.
- Keep “Also remove the XMP metadata stream” ticked if you changed the title or author, so readers don't show the old values from XMP.
- Click “Save & download” — or “Remove all metadata” to download a copy with no document Info and no XMP.
Examples
Title: Microsoft Word - draft_v7_FINAL.docx Author: jsmith Producer: Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365
Title: Annual Report 2026 Author: Northwind Ltd Producer: Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365
No Info dictionary, no XMP stream — readers show the file name as the title
Supported formats
- Input: standard, unencrypted PDF files up to 200 MB.
- Output: <name>-metadata.pdf. Only the fields you change are rewritten; everything else is copied as is.
- Dates are entered in your local time and stored in UTC (for example D:20260109143000Z).
Privacy
Your input is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads its open-source processing library from cdnjs.cloudflare.com — the library is downloaded, your data is not sent. Privacy policy.
Limitations
- Only document-level metadata is edited: the Info dictionary and the catalog's XMP stream. Per-page metadata, EXIF data inside embedded photos, form field values, comments, attachments and the visible text are not touched.
- Editing does not rewrite the XMP stream; it can only be removed. Leave it in place only if you are happy for it to keep the old values.
- Password-protected (encrypted) PDFs cannot be opened — remove the password first.
- The file is re-saved by pdf-lib, which writes a PDF 1.7 header and compressed cross-reference streams. Very old readers that only support PDF 1.4 may not open the result.
FAQ
Does “Remove all metadata” make a PDF anonymous?
It removes the document Info dictionary (title, author, creator, producer, dates and any custom entries) and the XMP metadata stream, and pdf-lib is told not to add its own Producer or dates back. The page content can still identify you — names in the text, EXIF data inside embedded photos, comments or form fields — so check those separately.
Can an old title come back from an earlier version of the file?
Not from this tool's output. PDFs edited with “incremental save” keep earlier revisions appended in the file. This tool writes a fresh file and drops every object that is no longer referenced, so superseded Info dictionaries and XMP streams are not carried over.
Why does Acrobat still show the old title after I changed it?
Acrobat and some other readers prefer the XMP metadata stream over the Info dictionary. Tick “Also remove the XMP metadata stream” when saving and the reader falls back to the values you entered.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is read into memory in your browser and rewritten there with pdf-lib; the result is offered as a download from your own device.
