Data Storage Converter
Convert any storage quantity across both unit families: the decimal units marketing uses (KB = 1,000 bytes) and the binary units your OS often reports (KiB = 1,024 bytes). The conversion is exact, which is precisely why a “1 TB” drive shows up as about 931 GiB.
How to use
- Enter a value and pick its unit.
- Pick the unit to convert to — results update as you type.
- Mix families freely (GB → GiB, MiB → MB, bits → TB) to see the real differences.
Examples
≈ 931.32 GiB
536.87 MB
Supported formats
- Units: bit, B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB (decimal ×1000) and KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB (binary ×1024).

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or open is sent anywhere. Privacy policy.
Limitations
- Follows the standard IEC/SI definitions: KB = 1,000 B and KiB = 1,024 B. Contexts that casually say “KB” for 1,024 bytes will differ by design.
FAQ
Why does my 1 TB drive show only ~931 GB?
The drive is sold in decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes) but Windows reports binary units (GiB = 2³⁰ bytes) while labeling them GB. 10¹² ÷ 2³⁰ ≈ 931. Nothing is missing.
What's the difference between MB and MiB?
MB is 1,000,000 bytes; MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰) — about 4.9% larger. The -bi- units are the unambiguous binary ones.
How many bits are in a megabyte?
8,000,000 — a byte is 8 bits and mega is one million. Convert MB → bit here to verify any value instantly.
