Download Time Calculator

Enter a file size and your connection speed and get the transfer time. The calculator handles the trap that catches everyone: internet plans are sold in megaBITS per second, but file sizes are megaBYTES — a factor of eight apart.

Runs locally — nothing you enter is sent Calculators Free · no signup

How to use

  1. Enter the file size and its unit (MB, GB, TB, MiB, GiB).
  2. Enter your connection speed and its unit — Mbps for a typical plan, MBps if you know the byte rate.
  3. Read the duration; the note shows what your plan actually moves in MB per second.

Examples

4.7 GB DVD at 50 Mbps
≈ 12 min 32 s

Supported formats

  • Size units: MB, GB, TB, MiB, GiB. Speed units: Kbps, Mbps, Gbps (bits) and KBps, MBps (bytes).

Limitations

  • Results are the theoretical best case — real downloads add protocol overhead, server limits and Wi-Fi variance, so expect somewhat longer.

FAQ

Why is my 100 Mbps connection not downloading at 100 MB/s?

Mbps is megaBITS per second; a byte is 8 bits. 100 Mbps moves at most 12.5 MB each second — that's the plan working exactly as advertised.

How long does a 50 GB game take on 100 Mbps?

About 67 minutes in theory (50 GB = 400 gigabits ÷ 100 Mbps = 4,000 s). Enter your own numbers to get the exact figure.
